Yucatan
In the Mayan region of Mexico, Yucatan,
which means “land of little water,” the oldest and most popular dances are
called Jarana. This dance style is the mestizo interpretation of the
“Spanish Jota.” The gentlemen dance with gallantry towards the woman,
always maintaining a respectful distance between them. The space allows
playful a choreography in which partners flirtatiously move from one side
to another. The arms are held up while snapping fingers keep time,
probably imitating the Spanish castanet.
