Tabasco
The
Zapateado Tabasqueño represents the last
link of a long chain. It absorbed the elements of the Spanish form from
where it originated, but it also incorporated elements of the music and
dance styles of the Black population that was introduced to the New World
in slavery, as well as native characteristics. It combines songs, dance,
and music in one single unit that cannot be separated. The music is truly
cheerful, and the footwork is fast and different from the Jarabes and
Sones which also emerged from the Spanish Zapateado. The most
characteristic gesture is the fast crossing of foot at regular intervals
during the dance.
