Puebla
These dances
emerged during the Colonial era, when people improvised lyrics and dance
steps to songs. These compositions filled with clever, and at times,
naughty messages, soon became a trend throughout the country. Although at
the time, these dances were prohibited, but the tradition managed to
survive Mexico’s Independence War and French invasion in the state of
Puebla. They are one of the richest forms of popular art bringing together
theater and poetry.
